Curriculum-Art & Design

Intent

Our intent is to provide opportunities for children to engage in an exciting and empowering curriculum that equips them for today and tomorrow. Our curriculum is designed to recognise children’s prior learning, build resilience and create active unique learners who can reflect, question, wonder, think, connect, be self-aware and become creative. We intend to provide enriched opportunities for our children to build knowledge, make meaning, be happy, investigative with no limits to curiosity and apply understanding across a range of learning experiences.

Our intent is to teach the skills and technical ability required for children to communicate through Art and D&T. We want our children to have the tools and confidence to display their creativity, thoughts and experiences in expressive and varied ways. We will provide an education which will engage, inspire and challenge pupils, taught through discrete and cross curricular sessions, which support children’s individual growth in these creative subjects. We will support our children to use and build upon subject specific and emotive language through creative subjects, as a result of meaningful and practical methods. Through the use of sketchbooks, children will have valued opportunities to record, plan, experiment and clarify their ideas. Time will be given for children to evaluate their work, their peers work and work of other Artists; encouraging critical thinking and personal development.

Implementation

Subject leaders ensure that the Art and design, and the Design and Technology curriculum are given high priority and that progress and standards are high. The whole school, starting in reception have a sketch book for Art and DT, continuing through the school, allowing to show progression. Learning is given a clear purpose, including opportunities for cross curriculum activities, making connections, motivating and inspiring children to equip them for learning today and in life tomorrow.

Impact

We use rigorous monitoring throughout the year to gauge the impact of the curriculum design. A whole school approach to review learning, evaluate pupil voice, providing individual feedback, celebrating positives and highlighting areas of development. Through the study of successful artists and designers, children develop understanding and use the correct topic vocabulary, knowledge and skills.

Frosterley Primary school has lots of talented artists, with work being celebrated and displayed in hallways and classrooms. We pride ourselves on our interactive, bright and inspiring displays. There are occasions where children’s talents are demonstrated to a wider audience, on display in the village hall and entered into national competitions.

Art and Design

The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:

• produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences

• become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques

• evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design

• know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
